Lorem ipsum dolar amet sit
A Latin phrase showing the Romans understood the value and importance of being outdoors over 2000 years ago.
“Above all do not lose your desire to walk. Everyday, I walk myself into a state of well-being and walk away from every illness. I have walked myself into my best thoughts, and I know of no thought so burdensome that one cannot walk away from it. But by sitting still, and the more one sits still, the one comes to feeling ill. Thus if one just keeps walking, everything will be all right.” Soren Kierkegaard taken from the book The Essential Kierkegaard.
Green open spaces create a calming effect and reduce feelings of stress and tension. Taking some time out to focus on the natural environment and being present in the moment can improve your mental health and wellbeing.
Undertaking outdoor activities of any kind can help you find a way of dealing with the stresses and strains of everyday life. Exploring and pushing your boundaries, and focusing on the here and now can help you put a different perspective on the things that matter in your life. Being willing to engage in more challenging activities, for example, completing a difficult Grade 1 scramble, a night-time walk or an invigorating hike in wind and rain will boost your confidence. It allows you to discover how much you are capable of and help dispel the fear of the unknown. And of course, the sense of achievement you get from making it to the summit of a mountain is a positive feeling you can keep with you forever.
As well as stunning views and fresh air, walking is a great exercise that is physically good for you. It lowers the chance of heart disease, improves your blood pressure and sugar levels and increases your bone density as walking is a weight bearing exercise. Walking also improves balance, helps control your weight, and strengthens your core, glutes, quadriceps, hamstrings and the muscles in your hips and lower legs.
Walking up and down hills and mountains will help you achieve and sustain a more moderate to vigorous level of activity. This green exercise brings added extras such as exposure to vitamin D from sunlight, and you will also be exercising your mind as you concentrate on your foot placement and balance.
The beautiful, tranquil landscape of the mountains is perfect for improving your physical and mental health and wellbeing; let nature help you heal.
