Walking in a winter wonderland

4 December 2023

Winter is upon us and it’s great to get out into the white stuff, to hear the crunch of fresh snow under each foot step. It does, however, present an added set of risks when out in the mountains.

Colder temperatures necessitate warmer clothing, make sure you pack extra layers as well as hats and gloves.

Slippy conditions underfoot can be improved by wearing boots with good grip as well as investing in a pair of crampons. Walking poles and/or an ice axe can improve stability and safety when walking in snow.

Navigation is harder when the weather comes in. Snow cover hides a lot of features and can even out contours so when the mist or a blizzard comes in it can be doubly difficult to get your bearings. It is essential to plan your route well and carry good navigation equipment like a map, compass and a GPS device.

Sunglasses and ski goggles are essential to protect your eyes from the sun or from snow and ice in strong winds.

A bit of careful planning and preparation can make for a great day out in wintry conditions likewise the opposite can also be true.
